An Observational Study of Monitoring Blood Pressure by Staff Nurses among Patients at Selected Hospital in Vapi, Valsad District, Gujarat

Abstract

Background: Blood pressure readings are an important indicator or a patient’s health and risk of hypertension and stroke. Accurate techniques require and up-to-date knowledge, and is a key part of the nurses everyday practice. Aim: The aim of the study was to have an insight on the level of practice of staff nurses regarding measurement of blood pressure among patients. Method: The study was carried out by using descriptive cross sectional design. The study was conducted on 30 nurses working in Haria L.G. Rotary Hospital, Vapi. A non-probability convenient sampling technique was used. Standardized blood pressure measurement technique skill checklist was used to assess the level of practice of the staff nurses. Results: The results of the study evidently showed 20(66.67%) of staff nurses were found following correct practices and 10(33.33%) were following partially correct practices of blood pressure monitoring among patients. There was no significant association between the level of practice and demographic variables. Conclusion: The study revealed that the staff nurses need to update their knowledge and practice regarding blood pressure monitoring as it’s the very first and very vital step of patient care.
