Abstract

This paper is intended to reduce harmonic distortion and significantly enhance power quality by using a passive shunt filter. Harmonic distortion in the power system is increased rapidly due to extensive non-linear loads' installation and usage. Non-linear loads produce harmonics which are responsible for drawing current in an abrupt pulse rather than in a smooth sinusoidal manner. The typical non-linear load includes Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS), programmable logic controller (PLC's), variable-speed drives, various electronic devices, arc furnaces etc. Active filter still dominates the harmonic compensation at low/medium voltage rating, and on the other hand, passive shunt filter is proclaimed for medium/high voltage rating. In this work, an attempt has been made to carry out a MATLAB simulation in a dedicated three-phase system to monitor, examine and investigate the output results in the form of the waveform. It has been observed that the application of a passive shunt filter may prove beneficial in systematically diminishing unwanted harmonics in the power system network.
