Effectiveness of Planned Teaching Programme on Knowledge and Attitude Regarding Organ Donation among College Students at Selected Institutions in Madurai

Abstract

Organ donation is the gift of an organ to help someone who needs a transplant. It is vital that college students are in a unique position to bring change in society. The main aim of the study was to evaluate the knowledge and attitude regarding Organ donation among college students Quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test control group design was adopted. 120 college students were selected. Non-probability convenience sampling technique was used. A structured knowledge questionnaire and 5-point Likert scales were used for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied for analysis. The results show 80% of knowledge and 60% negative attitude in the control group and 92% of knowledge and 98% of positive outcome in the experimental group. ‘t-test value of knowledge and attitude among college students within the experimental group were 24.4 (P<0.001) and 15.37 (P<0.001). These were shown to be highly significant and 0.84 and 0.67 in the control group and shows not significant. Unpaired ‘t’ test on knowledge and attitude score between the group was 18.52 (P<0.001) and 18.37 (P<0.001). karl Pearson's coefficient of correlation between knowledge and attitude was ‘r’=0.67(P<0.001) showing a significant relationship, There was no significant association between the level of knowledge and socio-demographic variables. Regarding age χ2=11.18(P<0.05) shows the association with selected socio-demographic variables in attitude. This study concludes that the planned teaching program plays a vital role in increasing the knowledge and attitude level among college students on Organ donation. The investigator assures that, every college student who has been taken part in this study will perform a greater part in promoting Organ donation.
