Abstract

The performance of the engine depends upon the design of the cylinder head and its ability to withstand high pressures generated during the combustion process. In the present study, the existing cylinder head used for the Tata Motors vehicle requires a long manufacturing cycle time for its machining. So we decided to apply the knowledge from our course study with some additional information and tried to reduce the cycle time of a cylinder head cover. This research basically works with some changes in tool combination and revising some parameters like speed, feed, etc. to achieve the objectives of lowering the time for each machining process. When a manufacturing operation time is reduced, it leads to an increase in profits as the production rate is increased [10]. The outcome of reducing cycle time includes a reduction in inventory and a reduction in labor costs. This research focuses on lean manufacturing and reduction of cycle time through a thorough investigation of every process including corresponding input parameters in order to reduce cycle time and production costs at every step during the manufacturing of cylinder head covers which leads to improvements in profit margins and reduction in production cost leading to increased sales of the product. Manufacturers of engine parts should remember that customer satisfaction should not be compromised while reducing cycle time. Reduction cycle time allows salespeople to meet the demands and expectations of customers [9].
