A Study to Assess the Level of Knowledge Regarding Menstrual Hygiene Among Nursing Students

Menstruation is a natural process linked with several perceptions and practices that may result in adverse health outcomes. There is a substantial lacuna in the knowledge about menstruation among adolescent girls. This study is designed to investigate and assess knowledge regarding menstrual hygiene. The present study was conducted at Simet College of Nursing, Trivandrum. In our present study, subjects between 17-18 yrs. of age 10% and 19-20 years of age group is 90%. As per marital status, 45 were married, and 96% were unmarried. According to religion, 48% were Hindu, 46% were Christian, and 6% were Muslim. As per residence 46% were from an urban area and 54% were from a rural area. According to the educational level of mothers, 98% were literate and 2% were illiterate. As per occupation, 70% were homemakers, 16% were businesses and 14% were government services. According to the type of family, 90% were nuclear, 10% were joint family, as per family income 225 were below Rs 3000, 44% were between 3000-10000, and 34 were above 10,000. As per the source of information about menstruation, 80% were from mothers, 8% were from teachers and 12% were from friends.
