Agent Based Simulation for Understanding Urban Dynamics

A city is generally considered as an organic complex system. A city is highly interactive and contains various interactive sub-divisions and is also being affected by various factors like land use patterns, population growth, government policies, transportation infrastructure and highly on demand and supply of goods. Among these factors land-use patterns and transportation infrastructure are considered to be affecting the urban growth on a long term basis.In the present scenario, the cities in this world contains more than half percent of the world’s population, and which is expected to increase drastically throughout this century. Speaking about the growth of the city, some questions such as which cities are expected to grow over time, if the growth happens what will be the patterns followed, and how the infrastructure of the city will cope- up with the growth. In order to study and explore this urban evolution, modeling and simulation could be considered as powerful tools.The objective of this research is to analyze and model urban growth. Urban growth modeling is an interdisciplinary field, so this research is to make an effort to integrate knowledge and methods from other scientific and technical areas to advance network analysis and modeling. Multi agent system could be applied to model urban growth with considering population growth as the main driving factor of urban growth.The main objective of the research is the bottom-up approach in analyzing the data and modelling the urban growth, in order to get better understanding on problems like congestion, segregation, urban sprawl etc. The purpose of the work is to examine the feasibility of applying the concepts of multi agent systems and agent based modeling in the construction of the model of a city. We will develop an algorithmic approach for this purpose and examine a method of supporting the algorithm by evolving the necessary computational rules that control agent behavior and decision making.This idea of this paper is to give an overview of MAS models and comparing and contrasting them with the past generation models by understanding how the different elements of a city interact with each other and an ability to have better understanding of cities in near future.

Review of the Passive Solar Building Designs

It is an urgent need of today’s present time for sustainable development. With ever growing infrastructure everyday construction and maintenance of buildings require huge amount of power usage. Passive solar building designing can be a key answer to this problem and a huge step towards sustainable development by meeting the power demands by solar energy usage. This paper is a suggestive and analytical, theoretical and indicative study of developments in solar passive building designing technology relevant to both developed and developing countries .The development of these areas is presented along with the scientific principles and various design concepts. Factors kept in mind for design strategies such as direct gain, indirect gain and isolated gain have been studied and described. Studies of site consideration, material availability and also economic cost have been taken into consideration. Some examples of previous successful designs both from Indian and Foreign buildings constructed during the past decades are detailed with their performances and remarks concluding the future and current trends have been indicated. A review of previous research works showing significant milestones in passive solar buildings has been studied and suggestions of new ideas have been incorporated. Hence it can be seen that power usage reduction in solar efficient building will enhance the sustainable development of a region.

Traditional Houses in North East India

Northeast India is one of the most scenic places of India. It has a rich variety of heritage, culture and tradition. Such tradition history and diversity brings a lot of variations in way of livelihood, tradition, ethics etc. Such kind of diversity in their lifestyle is also reflected in the houses they live in. We find a rich divergence of houses in each and every states of Northeast. Hence, in this research an attempt has been made to study different types of traditional houses of the Northeast. The study will involve houses from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. The study will involve the suitability of every type of house in their respective areas. Further in this research the style, the architecture, the structure and the orientation of these houses are studied. The different building materials used in the construction of these houses are also studied in this research. Few examples of traditional houses are taken as case studies and their utility is studied in building those houses. Cost comparison is done to study the cost effectiveness of these traditional houses. Since locally available materials are used in building these houses, they will lead to sustainable development of the people. Moreover they give a great importance to their traditional and cultural values and these can be reflected on their structural practices, designs, aesthetics, etc.
