Abstract

One of the world’s most significant battles is waging against COVID-19, a highly contagious disease that has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and left severe patients requiring artificial respiration. To combat the ongoing pandemic, a variety of low-cost, simple-to-assemble portable ventilators have been proposed as a solution to the medical infrastructure's lack of ventilators. The components used to make these mechanical ventilators are typically readily available around the world. Such parts are now connected with everyday devices or things that don’t need specific assembly processes. To combat the ongoing pandemic, a variety of designs have been proposed that focus on meeting fundamental requirements for artificial ventilation. However, due to their low reliability and inability to meet certain clinical requirements, some individuals oppose the use of these mechanical ventilators in actual situations. Each design has its advantages and disadvantages, which must be taken into consideration for effective design. As a result, this project aims to conduct a systematic analysis of a pool of potential designs to provide an overview of various design parameters that must be considered when creating portable ventilators. We were able to identify several factors that have an impact on the performance of the device and how these factors must be taken into account for the device to function effectively by reviewing the existing literature.
