A Flexible Dedicated Short Distance Communication “DSRC” protocol is discussed in this
paper which is for intelligent transportation system. The DSRC modules are based on IEEE
802.11p which is a standard for VANET (Vehicular AD-Hoc network). The architecture is
designed such that it can adopt other encoding and modulation techniques, therefore, it is a
flexible. DSRC is a multi-layered architecture. DSRC is used for vehicular safety and nonsafety applications. A different methodology for MAC (Medium Access control) is used in this
architecture which has set of service values which are used to communicate with other
vehicles and infrastructures. This architecture provides full duplex communication between
vehicles for safety applications and vehicle to infrastructure for various set of non-safety
applications. The layers considered are designed with the help of ISE (Integrated Software
Environment) design suite and the results are simulated and verified with expected outputs in
ISim.
