Abstract

A Quasi experimental study to assess the effectiveness of structured-teaching programme (STP) on Knowledge and Practice regarding selected postnatal exercises among Antenatal mothers admitted for Lower segment Caesarean section at a selected Hospital in Latur, Maharashtra. This study aims to: 1.To assess the pretest knowledge regarding postnatal exercises on antenatal mothers admitted for lower segment caesarean section 2. To determine the effectiveness of structured-teaching programme in terms of knowledge and practice on postnatal exercises among the mothers who had undergone lower segment caesarean section 3.To associate the pretest knowledge with selected demographic and obstetric variables. Methods & Materials: A quantitative approach with one group pretest and posttest design was used for 60 subjects, an interview schedule using structured questions was employed to measure knowledge and practice. The pretest was conducted followed by a structured-teaching programme was given to the mothers on postnatal exercises. After 7 days the posttest was conducted and the outcome in terms of knowledge and practice towards the postnatal exercises were evaluated by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Sampling technique: The investigator selected subjects by using the convenience sampling technique. Results: The study revealed that the knowledge on postnatal exercises before the structuredteaching programme was inadequate 93.3%, moderately adequate 6.7%, and none of the mothers had adequate knowledge. After the structured-teaching programme the knowledge was gained by 73.3% of mothers and moderately adequate knowledge 26.7% and none of the mothers had inadequate knowledge. The post-test revealed that 55(91.7%) mothers had gained adequate practice on postnatal exercises and only 5 (8.3%) mothers had moderately adequate practice after the STP. There was a significant increase in the level of knowledge of the mothers between pretest and posttest. Conclusion: The structured-teaching programme on postnatal exercises was carried out and it has improved the knowledge and practice of the mothers regarding the purposes, guidelines, advantages and steps of various postnatal exercises. Such teaching programme can be carried out in the hospital and community to improve the health of mothers.
