Abstract

Pedestrian road crossing is a location-based phenomenon and is considered in urban areas. To plan and design the urban traffic, it needs the pedestrian flow characteristics. During this research work, both online and on-street pedestrian surveys were used to obtain the perspectives of pedestrians at uncontrolled locations. Data were collected from selected locations of Progoti Sarani Avenue of Dhaka City, Bangladesh by questionnaire survey method. The average walking speed of the pedestrian at the specified location was is 2-3 ft/sec. Analyzing the responses of the survey participants, the factors that have the greatest influence on the pedestrian responses were lack of awareness, the tendency of the quick cross, the availability of an alternate crossing, frequency of crossing, understanding of basic signs and signals, road markings, etc. It is expected that the results will be highly useful in the planning, designing, and maintaining the pedestrian networks for the safe and convenient movement of pedestrians.
