Beams are the most important part of any reinforced concrete structural frame as they carry bending moments and shear force coming from the member supported on it. Generally, beams used in construction of RCC frame structure are prismatic in section and more specifically rectangular in section. As there are many advantages of such beam in short span and medium span beam, they become very much thicker, weighted and bulky for the long span. Thus, they become inefficient and uneconomical. The haunch beam having varying cross-sectional area will be more efficient and economical for large span beams. The hunched beam may also be used as part of RCC portal frame with various advantages in terms of strength, stability, economy and efficiency. Haunch beam frame structure is very much beneficial under static loading as well as under earthquake loading too. Present study gives a broad review over the many advantages of the haunch beam and haunch beam frame structure through analytical and experimental works.
