Assessment of Indoor Space Material Finish of the Aged Residences: A Case of Akure, Nigeria

Abstract

A well landscape interior of a residential building is the living environment of human as it increases the happiness of those living within such interior. Daily activities are limited to the indoor spaces at old age owing to the peculiarity of frail health and agility that acquaint ageing process and the vulnerability to nature. So, there is a need to examine the building materials used for their indoor spaces due to the influence the materials could have on the aged health and well-being. The usefulness and influence of landscape elements, finishes and material used for indoor spaces on the aged health and social interaction was investigated within and around Akure, Nigeria. A structured interview was the methodological procedure considered for the study and relevant literature, which allowed for an in-depth knowledge of the subject matter were reviewed. The characteristics of both indigenous and the imported materials, the built environment and the implication of the materials and the environment on aged health were the major considerations. The results ascertain the usefulness of soft landscape elements and indigenous material as the best consideration for better living condition of the aged in Nigeria. The study, therefore, propose that indigenous material should be improved upon in quality and construction technique.
