Abstract

Flooding is a major problem in India. Due to the rise in population, and industrialization floods are occurring very frequently. Due to a lack of proper run-off and drainage facility floods gets severe which in turn causes loss of lives, crops, flora, fauna, and livelihood. Another reason for floods is due to undulated terrain, climatic changes, and topography. To overcome this problem, proper management of the drainage system is required. In areas like Balaghat due to the Wainganga River, there is always a condition for flooding when there is rainfall, therefore it is essential to prepare a flood hazard mapping for that area in order to overcome flood can be overcome priory., this is done using HEC-RAS software which demonstrates the frequency of flood, the intensity of flood, also the areas which are likely to be affected by floods. The data collected from the local government
department tells us about how frequent floods in that area are. These collected data are then fed into the flood hazard models which further ascertain the corresponding flood level in the different return periods.
