Abstract

Contamination of water with heavy metals has drawn the attention of numerous researchers across the globe because of its adverse effects on environment and public health. Many researchers have reported authentic information on the sources, effects, and remedial procedure of heavy metals in water. The continuous industrialization, urbanization, and unplanned dumping of waste materials in water bodies are considered to be main factors of increasing extent of heavy metals in water. In many parts of the world, the level of heavy metal is significantly higher than their respective local guidelines and international standards as well. In the case of developing countries, the scenario is more crucial because of the economic condition that does not allow them to have access to better technologies to deal with the problem. As a result, sufferings from heavy metal causing diseases are at its peak. The purpose of this review paper is to demonstrate the sources and expands of heavy metals in different countries around the world keeping special focus on India.
