Abstract

The increasing water demand of world can be fulfilled through creation of new resources of water and by developing and/or optimizing the existing water resources/reservoir. For an agriculture-based country like India, where 90-95% of the water required to fulfil the demand, is available only in monsoon season, it is essential to create new storage for storing the excess available water during this period. The existing sources of water are being scarce continuously because of exponential growth of human population as well as urbanization and industrialization. This increasing demand cannot be fulfilled by creation of new reservoir as there is limited availability of such sites plus the cost of new project also limits its suitability for major rivers and their tributaries. Considering these aspects, the only feasible solution is optimal utilization of existing water resources. In order to meet the increasing demand, development of new release policies for optimal operation of a reservoir is essential but complex phenomenon and cannot be accomplished without using system analysis technique. There is no general analysis technique or algorithm available, which can be applied to all reservoirs for getting the optimal results. Each reservoir needs to be considered as an individual problem for developing the desired optimal operational policies. Considering these facts, the present study is focused in the development of strategies for optimal utilization of available water in existing reservoir, Ravi Shankar Sagar reservoir in MRP complex, Dhamtari district, Raipur Chhattisgarh state.
