Low Cost Municipal Wastewater Treatment Using Water Hyacinth

Abstract

Water hyacinth covering the surface water bodies is major problem where effective control
programs are not in place. Municipal wastewater is any water that has been negatively
impacted by human use. Wastewater is by-product of domestic, industrial, commercial or
agricultural activities. Municipal wastewater is treated in sewage treatment plant.
Phytoremediation is biological wastewater treatment method which uses the concept of
plants-based systems and microbiological processes to remove contaminates from the
wastewater. The objective of this research is to improve a shallow pond water hyacinth
system by using bio-hedge which is an advantageous method which helps in removing the
contaminants effectively from the municipal wastewater. This process is a suitable as it is
ecofriendly way of treating the wastewater, energy saving and cost effective.
