Abstract

Development is a vital process in any place, when the development and context have no relation, the built culture evolving will be alien to the traditional settlement therefore development should happen knowing the culture and identity of the place. Thrissur is one such city which has a great cultural identity. It is known as the cultural capital of Kerala and one of the few planned traditional city established by Shakthan thamburan during the 18th century, around the precincts of Vadakkumnathan temple. Despite rapid changes in the economy and society and the growing pressure for development the traditional urban core of the city still struggle to retain its basic characteristics and needs. The present scenario calls for a renewed understanding on spatially and socially responsive planning and design interventions for development of heritage precincts.
