A Comprehensive Study of Present Conditions, Causes and Mitigation Measures for Road Traffic Accident at Rajshahi Metropolitan City, Rajshahi, Bangladesh

Abstract

Nowadays road traffic accidents draw attention worldwide due to having the burning question in transportation systems which creates the increasing amount of injured persons, loss and destruction of valuable lives, wastage, and reduction of property. In Bangladesh, about 7,855 people have died and 13,330 persons were injured in 5,516 road accidents last year in 2019. Many countries are the victim of this great problem but Low and middle-income countries are the most in the world. Road accidents are taken place frequently in Rajshahi and it is a very crucial city for road accidents across the country. In this paper, the collected road accident data (Number of an accident, number of death and number of injury) for three years (2018, 2019, and 2020) is presented according to the Fire Service and Civil Defense Station, Rajshahi City. It is found that about 94 accidents happen in these consecutive three years which represents the severity condition of road accidents in this city. A questionnaire survey is carried out to know the overall situations and causes of the road accidents which are shown in this paper with their mitigation measures. About 52% of the total accidents on road were happened by motor vehicles and auto-rickshaw. About 82% of the total victims of road accidents were between ages 20 to 50 years old where it was also found that most of the victims were pedestrians because of their faulty movement on roads and also the drivers didn’t follow the traffic rules correctly.
