This review focused on the type of foundation used in black cotton soil. Indian Black cotton soil consists of two minerals Montmorillonite and kaolinite by virtue of which it swells and shrinks with wetting and drying. A structure is said to be stable when all the requirement of stability is satisfied by the structural elements and foundation. Structures will be more stable when it consist appropriate type of foundation as per the requirement. In general practice pile foundation, raft foundation, strap foundation and raft with pile foundation are preferred in black cotton soil but most commonly used foundation is pile foundation. The combination of two foundations such as raft with pile foundation, isolated with strap foundation and raft with strap foundation are new concepts in field of foundation engineering and structural engineering. Expansive soil needs more precautions when it comes to the selection of foundation to be constructed due to its low bearing capacity. The major problem during construction of foundation in black cotton soil is settlement of foundation due to its low bearing capacity. In this project combination of strap beam foundation with pile foundation will be studied. A case study on an ongoing project of tall structure in Indore is done in which Strap beam pile foundation is used as foundation and cost comparison of regular foundation with strap beam foundation will be carried out.
