Abstract

In India, oral cancer is a serious health issue. In the current research, the degree of oral cancer prevention knowledge among the Tribes of the chosen Colony in Wayanad was examined. The objective of the study was to assess the level of knowledge regarding the prevention of oral cancer among tribes, to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programmes on the prevention of oral cancer among tribes, to determine the association between the knowledge regarding the prevention of oral cancer among tribes with selected personal variables. The study was carried out among Tribes of the selected colony at Wayanad. 30 tribes in total were chosen using the convenience selection method. The method of study was one group pre-test-post-test design. We offered a prepared educational programme on how to avoid oral cancer. The semi-structured knowledge questionnaire was used as a tool. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to examine the data. The chi-square test was used to find out the association. The knowledge of the subjects ranges from 2-14 with a mean of 8.13 and SD of 3.09. The knowledge level of subjects increased after the planned teaching programme, which was also found statistically significant P (<0.01). This study shows that there is a significant association between knowledge of tribes on demographic variables like Age, Education, and Habit at a 0.05 level of significance. The present study concludes that nurses should take the initiative to assess the knowledge regarding the prevention of oral cancer among the tribes to improve the quality of life.
