Analysis of Public Transport Accessibility for Some Selected Locations in the Tejgaon Area of Dhaka Bangladesh

Abstract

Access to public transportation is vital for the general public, particularly for marginalized groups. This research explores people’s problems when using public transport to reach their workplace in Tejgaon who performed this research via an online Google form. The survey includes universities and hospitals which used online surveys to collect data and collected data from various age groups, educational qualifications, gender, income, occupation, and modes of transport. For marginalized groups, public transportation provides affordable and convenient access to work. However, many people cannot board public transit from their front door to work. They have to use a couple of other modes of transportation to reach the public transportation stand, which costs extra time and money. Also, many people need to go to their workplace right after getting off public transportation. They also have to change modes of transportation to match their workplace. This process takes longer and costs more, which is undesirable. Of the people we surveyed, 65% of them use public transportation. Where 90% use buses and 10% use Lagunas. Of those people who use the bus, most of them need help to get on the bus from their residences. More than half of respondents cannot board public transportation directly from their front door. Among them, 44% of all respondents needed to change vehicles once to reach their workplace. More than half of respondents cannot reach their workplace directly after getting off public transportation. 64% of respondents need to change their vehicles once after getting off the bus to reach their workplace. More than half of all respondents must change cars once to get to the bus stop. Forty-eight percent of total respondents who use public transportation face the most critical problem in terms of reaching their workplace. They cannot board public transportation directly from their front door and do not arrive at their workplace immediately after exiting the vehicle. For marginalized groups, public transit provides reliable and convenient access to reach their work every day. This study explores people’s problems while using public transit to reach their workplaces. Policymakers should create new public transportation routes for challenging areas that are not easily accessible from the Tejgaon area.
