Abstract

This paper performs analysis and design of
reinforced concrete (RC) culvert to convey
surface runoff through the road embankment
at the Faculty of Science and Technical
Education (FSTE), Rivers State University
(RSU), Port Harcourt. The Design comprises
four components analysis; hydrologic analysis
which involves the estimation of the design
flow rate based upon the climatological and
catchment characteristics. The hydraulic
analysis using manning and energy equations
produced the barrel diameter and the type of
flow control in the culvert barrel. The
structural analysis using HB loading of 45
units; 20kN/m2 to produce the barrel material
thickness. The bill of engineering
measurement and evaluation (BEME)
consists of earthworks, in-situ concrete
(provide and place) in footings. The results
obtained are surface runoff of 8.8 m3/sec and
internal diameter of 1200mm and barrel
thickness of 150mm, the culvert is design to
flow under outlet-control conditions with subcritical
flow. The total estimated cost for the
1200mm internal diameter (Double cell)
culverts – INO is four million, eight hundred
and seventy-five thousand Naira only. I
recommend that Rivers State University
adopt the outcome of the design from this
research to prevent further flooding.
