Analysis of the Factors Influencing Mode Choice of Public Transportation in Indore City

Abstract

Recent stress on enhancing public transport use in city transportation calls for shift in the mode choice of the travelers. Mode choice is the process of taking a decision regarding which mode to be chosen for use among available modes under a set of circumstances. The circumstances may be behavioral, socio-economic or technical. For modeling of mode choice maximum research has been carried out using Multinomial Logit Model, In the light of its wide applicability it has been used for the present study. The emphasis is on the public transportation mode choice in the city of Indore among the available public transportation modes. The transportation system of any city works with the travel behavior and the mode choice. Analysis has been carried out based on the data procured from the questionnaire survey. The modelling has been done using SPSS (Version 26) software. Public transportation modes has been taken as dependent variables and gender, age, occupation, monthly income, trip time, trip distance and trip cost is taken as independent variables. The model was capable of defining the variation of 35.7% to 69.9% for the dependent variable at 95% confidence level. The main conclusion is that among all public transportation modes the city bus is the most preferred mode of public transportation.
