Road Traffic Accident Situation in Dhaka City, Bangladesh

Abstract

Road accidents are regarded as the most serious public health problem, resulting in countless injuries and deaths globally. Bangladesh’s capital city, Dhaka, is also one of the world's most populous. Dhaka is the city that experiences one of the highest rates of such accidents. Using accident victims, drivers, and accident characteristics as a basis, we want to learn more about Dhaka's accident conditions. For this paper accident report form, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) provided raw data from 2015 to 2020. A total number of 1746 accidents occurred during 2015-2020 in this study area. This has caused of 89.75% victims to be pedestrians. Victims were almost 17% aged 36-40 years and 13.40% aged 21-25 years old. The vehicles are responsible for accidents Bus 35.24%, motorcycle 12.31%, and heavy trucks 10.14%. Height 39.94% accidents involved driver’s age between 36-40 years old. Drivers are 10% suspected of drunken alcohol during an accident. Here found the highest accidents, as hours 10:00 am to 11:00 total 217 found accidents, as a day Friday total 197 accidents and as a month January 199 accidents. In the Dhaka Metropolitan area, 43% of accidents have occurred at not-junction and 65% collisions with pedestrians. Maximum accidents occurred at daytime 48% and at night 31%. To improve the situation in Dhaka city, some safety measures and long-term recommendations have been established.
