Pedestrian Road Crossing Behavior at Foot Over Bridge and Zebra Crossing at Progoti Sarani in Dhaka City

Abstract

Walking is one of the ancient modes of transportation that is commonly used for short trips nowadays. In developing countries like Bangladesh, majority of the road users are pedestrians. In the present era, the more the pedestrians will be on the roads, the more will be the conflicts. In Dhaka, accident risks are increasing day by day. In this research work, it is tried to show what percentage of people cross the road by pedestrian foot over bridges or by zebra-crossing at Progoti Sarani Road, Dhaka. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted over 300 plus pedestrian at different times of a day. To conclude from this research work, about 85% pedestrians agreed about the safety of foot over bridge. At the same time, it was commented that using foot over bridge was time consuming. Comparing between foot over bridge and zebra crossing, about 70% of the pedestrians satisfied with foot over bridge because of its reliability. To conclude, on order to increase present crossing facilities, two-third people agreed that both the foot over bridge and zebra crossing needed to be repaired.
